Reflection Park

Wendell Berry, an environmentalist, farmer, and prolific writer, published The Peace of Wild Things in 1968. It’s a beautiful poem that evokes the healing power of being in the natural world, especially during challenging times. Almost 60 years later, his words remain relevant. Many of his writings reflect on our collective responsibility to care for each other and the world, including his reminder that “...the care of the earth is our most ancient and most worthy and, after all, our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it, and to foster its renewal, is our only legitimate hope.” In honor of Mr. Berry’s recent death, we are taking a moment to reflect on care for our environment and each other. Care is one of Reflection Park’s three core operating principles, along with harmony and equity.

One of the ways we endeavor to care for each other is by creating quiet, meditative spaces, particularly for those who have recently experienced a loss. On August 30, we hosted our first Afternoon of Remembrance for families who have memorialized a loved one at Reflection Park through burials and memorial tree planting. The event was an opportunity to remember those we have lost as well as share our gratitude for families entrusting us with the care of their loved ones.

On that warm day, we gathered in the Sacred Circle, a clearing in the woods just off the main internal road at Reflection Park. We received the gift of song from the Montgomery Hospice Threshold Choir, harpist Jody Grossman’s lyrical interludes, and Jabari Exum’s soulful djembe drumming. To make the afternoon even more magical, the Threshold Choir loaned several gravity chairs, which allowed attendees to recline and gaze up into the circle of sky beyond the curving trees as enchanting sounds filled the space. We are grateful to everyone who attended that day and for the generosity of such talented local musicians.

Anissa Ferguson, whose mother is buried at Reflection Park, donated her time and talents to create this amazing artwork, listing all the names of each person memorialized at Reflection Park this last year, which served as a focal point for our Afternoon of Remembrance.

Reflection Park is all about meaningful connection to the natural cycle of life, death, and renewal. So it is especially significant that repurposed invasive “Princess Trees” (Paulownia tomentosa) have begun their second life as beautiful benches lining the edges of the Sacred Circle.

Please click this image (or any of the ones above) for a brief video of our afternoon together, which provides a sampling of the beautiful gift of song offered by the Threshold Choir. May their voices serve as a balm for all, particularly those who are grieving.

What’s Happening!
Events at Reflection Park

Join us on October 3rd from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm for Reflection Park’s first Natural Burial Ground BioBlitz!

What’s a BioBlitz? It’s an engaging way to spend time exploring nature while also cataloging the variety of living things within an area. Participants act as citizen scientists to record their observations of the plants, animals, and fungi they encounter as they move throughout a natural space.

For this event, we are using the free iNaturalist app to record our observations. No prior experience is needed! We will give participants a demonstration so you’ll know exactly what to do. We will also have experts available to share their knowledge about nature at Reflection Park and help with species identification.

A BioBlitz is as meaningful as it is enjoyable. Every observation helps us better understand the living landscape of Reflection Park. Our hope is that knowing a little more about what lives on the land will help us all do a better job of caring for it.

Additional Upcoming Events

Reflection Park received a grant from the Maryland Urban and Community Forestry Council to plant a dozen native evergreen trees in our southern forest conservation easement area. We are inviting our community to help us prepare the area by removing invasive species on Sunday, October 25th and planting new trees on Saturday, November 7th. This is a great opportunity for garden clubs, environmental groups and scouts troops, so please help us spread the word! Click below to learn more and register.

Reflection Park’s Common Ground series offers opportunities for the community to come together around planting native trees and flowers, removing invasive species, and maintaining our natural spaces. We are very grateful to the volunteers who devote their time and energy to caring for the nature of Reflection Park. It is especially gratifying when these volunteers share that they, too, have benefited from the experience. One volunteer noted how powerful it was to have “the sense of having actually accomplished something and being in a quiet forest.” Another appreciated the opportunity of “working together with people you don’t know for a common goal — saving trees from invasives!”

Pausing in the natural spaces at Reflection Park offers the opportunity to hear the stream flowing over rocks, delight in the color of a flower, or marvel at the speed of a hummingbird’s wings.

Reflection Park in the News

We are grateful for the ongoing interest in natural burial and Reflection Park! Most recently, Mark Seagraves of NBC4 joined one Reflection Park family on-site to share their story. We appreciate Cheryl Maynard-Ryan’s family for helping to raise awareness about natural burial. Please find this story and others on our new In the Media page.
